Wimbledon Invitation Challenge 13/04/08

Streatham won this event for the first time in it's 28 year existence, scoring 100 Points. In 2nd place with 95 points was Wimbledon who had previously held the trophy for 6 consecutive years. In third place was Crawley swords followed by Kingston, Poly, Salle Joseph, Egham and "Brighton" (which comprised of one fencer who was the Streatham reserve).

The format of the competition comprised of 2 people in each fencing discipline: John Watts & David Lowe for Sabre / Nike Ajibode and Nadya for Ladies Foil / Gavin Moulton & Joel Collyer for Epee / Chris Cooke & Chris Coton for Mens Foil. All the members qualified for the top pool after the initial seeding round and achieved good placings to hit the 100 points.

Surrey Foil Team Championship 30/03/08

Encouragingly Streatham put forward a number of teams to this event held in Epsom.

Streatham 'A' team got to the final and narrowly lost, by 1 point, to Salle Coton 'A' team with the score ending up at 44 - 45.

Streatham 'B' had a few close matches at 43-42 and 44-42 and Streatham 'C' only had 2/3's of a team, but is was a really enjoyable day and a great turn out from Streatham.

Streatham V Salle Gadaski (Away) 16/02/08

A return match, we visited Salle Gadaski in the City. Well done to eveyone who fenced. Included newcomers from our club who've been fencing around 6 to 12 months, fencing non-electric (steam). Matches were based on the Italian relay system up to 45 points.

Surrey Union Team Epee and Individual Epee, Sabre 10/2/08

After coming second in last years Team Epee, there was some hope that Streatham might better that this year. The Streatham team of Joel Collyer, Gavin Moulton and John Watts got off to a good start and won against LTFC. Their next match against Redhill and Reigate was tougher with all of Redhill and Reigate’s team members ranked in the GB top100, Streatham couldn’t quite over come the hurdle this presented. Their next opponents old rivals and friends Wimbledon was a closer match and it was equal points most of the way with Wimbledon 1 point ahead when the last two fencers, Joel Collyer and Tim Buzwell, faced each other on the piste. Joel pulled out some inspired moves to edge forward by one point to bring the score to 44-43 and in true epee style both fencers scored a double hit giving Streatham a 45-44 win. So Redhill and Reigate were 1st, Streatham 2nd (again) and Wimbledon 3rd.

In the individual event Joel came 3rd winning matches against Graham Miles (LTFC) and 15 – 14 against Rob Allen (R&R), he then met Tim Buzwell the eventual winner and couldn’t quite catch up on Tim’s initial lead. Gavin had a long and drawn out first DE which stretched over 3 periods of time, but he managed to edge forward from equal points to win 15-12. His next match against GB Under 20 ‘mens’ rep Taran Nichols was mostly all head to head with Gavin gaining a few points to equal at 14-14, only throw it all away and loose 15-14, giving Gavin around 8th place overall.

Well done to David who entered the individual Sabre and has only been recently dabbling with it and John Watts who fenced for the team and came out with some amazingly well timed touches.

Barwell Cup Team Event 09/12/07

We did well in putting forward 3 teams, albeit with the help of some ringers. Streatham A came 3rd with 24 points only 2 points behind Kingston who scored 26 points. In what appears to becoming an annoying habit Wimbledon A won again this year with 27 points, oh well there’s always next year. Streatham B came 4th and Streatham C came 5th. Notable performances came from Joel who was 2nd in the Epee, despite having hardly touched his epee this year, and Nike who came 3rd in the foil.

Wilkinson Sword - London Team Event 25/11/07

Streatham enjoyed a much improved performance in this years Wilkinson Sword and finished in the top 10. The team (Gavin Moulton, Joel Collyer and John Watts) fenced well but succumbed to an experienced Salle Gadaski team of Italian veterans before easily beating Greenwich and defeating the Barbarians 45-39 in an often heated encounter, before tiredness crept in and defeat to old rivals ULU ensued.

Streatham V Salle Gadaski 26/04/07

A friendly match with Salle Gadaski against us ruffians. Everyone was a winner because Salle Gadaski brought along 15 fencers, fencing all weapons, which is a major feat and probably a record for a club night match. This gave everyone experiece of fencing different people, maybe being on home turf gave streatham the edge. Hopefully this will be the first of many clubs matches in London and we look forward to the return match at Salle Gadaski.

Sussex Uni Open 04/07

Nick Fihosy came through to 3rd Place at this endearingly ramshakle affair, which shouldn't be taken too seriously.

Surrey Novice and Intermediate Foil 25th March 2007-2008

This years event was held at nearby Dulwich college, which is always an added bonus on a Sunday morning. There was a good haul of medals for streatham fencers, Selina Hill was in the final of the ladies intermediate foil and came away with 2nd place. Taking the opportunity to fence in the novice foil earlier in the morning and she also took 3rd place in that, perhaps it was only a warm up for the intermediate event.

In the men's novice foil newcomer Elliot Nash took 3rd place and Charles Grose came a respectable 5th place in the mens intermediate foil.

Surrey Team Open 02/07

A good day out at the Surrey Epee and Sabre the epeeists (Chris Coton, Joel and Gavin) beat Guildford 45-40 and then duffed LTFC C. They then faced Redhill and Reigate Epee Club, including Chris Howser (2005 British Men's Epee Champion) - we won 45-41 with Joel holding out against Chris Howser charge. The final was a truncated affair against LTFC due to the late hour - which ended up 45-36 based on three DEs all fenced at the same time.

ULU FENCING LONDON TEAM OPEN 11/06

Streatham Fencing Club won the Epee at the ULU (University of London Union) Fencing London Team Open. Streatham beat ULU 44-43 in the semi-finals after a tense match in which the scores were level almost until time ran out – at the end, Streatham’s Joel Collyer abandoned his usual cautious approach and chased ULU’s Graham Miles down the piste, catching him for the winning point. Streatham then went on to comfortably beat London Thames Fencing Club (Barnes) in the final. In the Foil, Streatham enjoyed an easy passage to the final, although it required an assured debut by teenager Selina Hill to turn 15-7 deficit to a 20-15 lead in their opening match to set them on their way. Unfortunately, Salle Gadaski (based in Moorfields) proved too strong for Streatham in the final, despite an epic fight back by Streatham’s Nick Fihosy in the final leg. Nick was compensated the following day when his daughter, Ayesha, won the South East U12 Girls’ Foil to qualify for the British Youth Championships. London Thames won the Sabre event in what was a successful inaugural event event in which 17 team s took part.
