Tony Cavey (President)

Tony Cavey joined the club back in the days before mobile phones or personal computers. So his activities as social secretary and Chairman have to be admired. His whole sheep roasts in the garden are legendary and he comes from the pink-tinged past of a serious Streatham Social club that occasionally fenced. He has always been willing to help, teaching beginners and acting as both the treasurer and the club armourer. He has been a stalwart of the club since the day he joined. His fencing as a classically neat and tidy fencer didn't allow room for mistakes and was always a delight to work with.

David Lowe (Treasurer)

Hello, I’m David Lowe and I’m the Treasurer of Streatham Fencing Club. This means that I collect in the membership subscriptions, pay the bills and generally keep tabs on the club’s bank account. I also keep the membership register, holding everyone’s contact details in case we need to get in touch with you. I learned fencing at school playing foil and sabre. I then had a long break before restarting at Streatham Fencing Club in the summer of 2006. It’s a great club and sport, combining amply my three main reasons for restarting: fun, exercise and social. I now mostly fence epee and regularly take part in competitions. I also fence sabre, sometimes in competitions, and will on occasion take my hand to a bout of foil.

Gavin Moulton (Match Organiser and Website Admin)

This is my third year as match organiser. Streatham first introduced me to local Surrey fencing matches some seven years ago and it’s a good way for you to get started, they are less daunting and more fun than big open competitions. I’m carrying the torch forward and hoping to introduce new fencers to local matches with other clubs and in the local surrey events. Streatham have an open attitude and we like to encourage you to fence for us, it’s not like getting picked for the school team. It’s good to fence other people outside the club and I believe it will help you go further as a fencer and the more match experience you get the better. I’ve also been doing the club’s website for the last few years, where you can also find updates of match results, future matches and events going at the club. I also build websites as a freelancer, that’s my day job.

Niké Ajibode (Club Captain)

A major figure in Streatham Fencing, distinguished by her wide smile and keen aptitude for the Epée. She has been fencing for some 10 years now and regularly forms part of the core Streatham team in friendly matches and in Surrey competitions. A couple of years ago she was the major success in the Alençon competitions in France, just losing the final of the Ladies Veteran competition.

Always helpful, always keen, Nike is a model fencer and a really nice person.

Roger Barnes (Secretary)

Many of you will know that I'm responsible for answering enquiries being the first point of contact with the club and for maintaining the mailing lists, keeping everyone up to date with what's happening. This fits in nicely with my role as Chairman of Surrey County Fencing Union who organise the local events. I am also Vice Chair of South East Region of British Fencing. I've been fencing for nearly fifteen years, mostly epee and some sabre. I've fenced for both London and the North West at the Veterans Winton Cup. I'm rdb811 on fencingforum. Highest rank 275 (Epee), 188 (Sabre) Most likely to say "We've tried it before and it doesn't work".

Chris Simpson (Promotions and Communications)

Chris is a relatively new fencer, semi-proficient in foil and, on occasion, epée. He has been fencing just over a year, and on the committee (where he is responsible for club publicity) since early 2010. Chris famously silenced his critics in the 2010 One-Hit Epée Competition, with what has since been described as an 'unforgettable... giant-slaying' performance. (Editor’s note: described thus by Chris himself).

Nick Stuart (Chairman)

I was introduced to fencing in 1984 at Sandhurst and after being kicked out of the army looked for a club for a couple of years, finally settling at Streatham. I loved the ethos of social but serious fencing; I became the match secretary, moving gradually up the ranks to become the present Chairman, and am usually the last one out of the pub on a Thursday night. I became an occasional coach in 1990 but kept fencing at all three weapons with my main one being epée; I was once ranked at 230 in the UK. At the club I’ve won club competitions in every decade since the 80s, usually in foil. I coach the club’s beginners’ class, and since 2007 have been running new clubs on the Isle of Wight and in Whitehall, which together with coaching in schools keeps me busy. I’m now refusing to give in to degraded joints and old age, and intend to fence and coach for another 30 years, oh and to transmit my enthusiasm for fencing to as many people as possible.

Barry Foxwell (Armourer)

Hi, I’m Barry and I’m the club armourer. I am responsible for making sure that the club kit is kept working (that means you break it, I fix it). I have been fencing for about twenty years. I have been on the committee for the past twelve years, first as the social secretary, then just as a comittee member and now the armourer. If you have any questions about kit, come and ask me - I don’t bite!

Roxane Liaumond (General Committee Member)

It’s been a year that I am learning how to use a foil; I wish to know more about the other weapons. I started fencing because I thought Keira Knightly was sexy with a sword, and I wanted to do the same as an actress. (A few months after I started fencing, I randomly met Keira Knightly and she was doing yoga with me. So that proved to me that this was the right decision.) I started doing friendly competitions in the club, but now I’m doing official competitions and am a member of the British Fencing Association. I know that I can t get amazingly good in one night, but I am now thinking of maybe having a career in fencing (what career, I don t know yet, time will tell). And I really care about my team mates. J I have just joined the Committee and help out where needed; I’ll be organising the women’s club competition this year.

Joshua Freeman-Birch (Young Fencers Representative)

I've been fencing for 5 years now and I mainly fence foil and epee.

I'm the junior representative so I tell the committee what changes the junior fencers want to see taking place.

Lara Bonici (General Committee Member)

Lara has been fencing for four years, and for the past two years has been the club’s Social Secretary. In this time, she organised trips to the Isle of Wight, taking part in her first competition on one of these visits, and went out in a blaze of glory organising the club’s 60th anniversary dinner. Unfortunately, her utility-belt-tastic job doesn’t give her the time she needs to stay on as Social Secretary, so she is now a Committee skivvy, helping out where needed. She also has trouble saying ‘plinth’ (how to know when to cut Lara off at the bar) and doesn’t like people knowing that she always has a pink biro in her bag.
