SURREY FENCING YOUTH CHAMPIONHIPS 2004 - 14/11/04

Another increase in numbers saw one hundred and eighty young fencers gathered at Epsom College on Sunday for the Surrey Fencing Youth Championships, which includes schools and clubs from South West London – a total of 31 such clubs and schools were represented, up from 23 last year and again including several new clubs and schools such as Oakfield School and City of London Freemans.

Victoria Maculay of Streatham Fencing Club dominated the Girl's U14 events, retaining her Foil title while dropping only four points and then sweeping to the Epee title before becoming the best girl in the Sabre, only losing 15-11 to Tom Ellis-Rees of Tooting based Salle Coton – Tom had earlier retained the Boy's U14 Foil title from clubmate Fabien Sadler. Guarav Gupta (Guilford Fencing Club) and Willaim Poku (Dunraven School, Streatham) picked up the bronze medals in this event. Jack Taylor, Salle Coton, won the Boy's U16 Foil,

Anthony Buswell and Georgi Sadler of Woking won the Boys and Girls U12 Foil events.

Whitgift School of Croydon dominated the senior age groups; with Deeban Ratneswaran of Whitgift School successfully moving up to the U18 age group to win the Boys Foil and older brother Kajanesh winning the U18 Epee. Younger brother Maiyura also successfully moved up an age group to become the U6 Sabre champion. Owen Gough of King's College School Fencing Club of Wimbledon (U18 Sabre) and broke Whitgift's domination by winning the U18 Sabre from Kajanesh Ratneswaran. Evelyn Capelin (Kingston Fencing Club) won the U18 Girls Foil –the U16 being won by Amy Church of Aldershot.

The rapid growth in the number of epeeists saw the introduction of U12 events for the first time. The U12 Boy's Epee was won by Pablo Bowles of Tiger Swords, who beat Jonathon Lewis–Oliver of City of London Freeman's School. James Frewin and Alexander Gregory, also of City of London Freeman's School, shared third place. Georgina Mitchell of Mickelfield School beat another Freeman's fencer, Juliet Ariel to win the U12 Girl's Epee.

The Boy's U14 Epee was won by Mark Inkester of Redhill and Reigate Epee Club, defeating Alex Ferguson of King's College School, Wimbledon.

The U16 Epee saw some close encounters with Aaron Gerdiner of Wimbledon Fencing Club finally beating his nemesis Patrick McGlone of Barnes based London Thames Fencing Club 15-13 in one semi-final, while Gareth Thomas (Tiger Swords, Leatherhead) beat his raval, Conrad Cotton-Barrett of Woking Fencing Club 15-12 in the other semi-final.
