SURREY NOVICES AND INTERMEDIATES CHAMPIONSHIPS 20th MARCH 2005

The Surrey Novices and Intermediates Championships were held on 20th March 2005 at Epsom College.

Streatham Fencing Club enjoyed another successful outing, collecting no fewer than five medals.

Junior Afra Morris won the Women's Novice Foil, defeating Judith Foulds of Wimbledon in the final. Hamish Thomas mirrored this in the Men's Novice Foil, with Padraig Byrne picking up a Bronze Medal in the same event.

In the Men's Intermediate Epee, Gavin Moulton was top seed after the pools and beat club mate Ewan Harper in the quarter finals, but could not maintain the pace and succumbed to Vilya Harvey of Guildford in the semi-finals. Vilya Harvey in turn lost to his club mate, Alec Johnson, 15-14 in a thrilling final.

The final of the Captain's Cup (Men's Intermediate Foil) saw Streatham's Rick Maher against Martin Smith of Tooting based Salle Coton. Rick Maher was in contention until the first break, when his opponent began to use his superior speed with telling effect.

The Invicta Open was held in Folkestone the same weekend and saw further success for Streatham - Tarenn Teller came third in the Women's Foil, in only her first year of fencing. Bob Anderson was also third in the Men's Foil.

Earlier in the week, Streatham cadet Victoria McAulay won the Mount-Haes (U14) Girls Foil at the Public Schools Fencing Championships, held at Crystal Palace. She also won the Girl's U14 Master at Arms finishing 5th in the Epee and 7th in the Sabre.
