The Surrey Youth Championships were held at Beverley achool, New Malden on 28th November 2004. The Surrey press release is given below.
SOUTH EAST REGION YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS 2004 (EPEE AND SABRE)
The Epee and Sabre events of the South East Region Youth Championships were held at Beverley School, New Malden saw over 130 entrants competing for places in the British Youth Championships. The event was dominated by fencers from Surrey (including South-West London).
The Girl's U14 Epee saw some close encounters in the closing stages - Sarah Milner of London Thames (Barnes) beating Natalie Hudson (Sir William Perkins, Chertsey) 15-11 in one semi-final, while Victoria McAulay of Streatham Fencing Club continued her recent run of good form by beating Felicity Neale of Tiger Swords (Shene) on the last point. Sarah then beat Victoria 15-12 in the final in a tense encounter.
The U16 girl's title went to Natasha Lewis-Oliver of Redhill and Reigate Epee Club, who beat Chloe Shaw of Bishop Challoner's School, Bromley. Jesscia Bell and Eleanor Hudson, both of Sir William Perkns, picked up the bronze medals.
Alexandra Blackman of Chichester won all her bouts to win the U18 Girl's Epee, just ahead of Nicola Lydall of Redill.
Victoria McAulay then proved her versatility with an easy win in the U14 Girl's Sabre, beating Victoria Bell of King's College School, Wimbledon. Fredericka Greatorex (London Thames) won the U16 Girl's Sabre.
Alex Fergusin (Kings College School Fencing Club, Wimbledon) won the Boy's U14 Epee, beating Gordon Cumming (Sir William Perkins) 15-8 in the final. Nevin Nursimloo (Whitgift School, Croydon) picked up a bronze.
Whitgift had more success when Kajanesh Ratneswaran won the U18 Boy's Epee, in a tight contest that saw many matches going to the last point. Jeyatesh Srishkandarajah was second. Kajanesh's younger brother Maiyuran chipped in with a bronze in the U16 Boy's Epee.
In the sabre events, Whitgift's success continued with Anton Howes beating team mate Nevin Nursimloo in the Boy's U14. Anton is the third generation of fencer in his family, his grandfather having fenced sabre for Great Britain.
Whitgift dominated the U16 Sabre – with Maiyuran Ratneswaran, Ning Kim and Ed Smith coming first, second and third respectively.
The U18 Sabre saw Jack Colligan of King's School, Canterbury beat Chris Schofield of Guildford. Owen Gough (King's College School, Wimbledon) and Kajanesh Ratneswaran (Whitgift) took bronze.
