SURREY COUNTY FENCING UNION

Epee and Sabre Championships 2004

The Surrey County Championships for Epee and Sabre were held today at Epsom College, with a very strong entry from around the county. The team events saw a similarly strong entry with teams from the major local clubs - Streatham, Wimbledon, Guildford, Kingston, Redhill and London Thames (Barnes) taking part.

Women's epee saw Elaine Ball of Wimbledon successfully overcoming Nike Ajibode of Streatham. Rose Fenton (Redhill & Reigate) and Coralie Bounard (Egham) came third.

The men's epee title was retained by

Chris Howser (Redhill & Reigate), defeating previous holders Howard West (London Thames) in the semi-finals and Neale Thomas (Guildford) in the final, who had overcome Ian de Whalley (Kingston) in his semi-final.

Chris Howser then went on to lead his Redhill club to their first victory in the team event, holding off an entertaining late challenge from Alp Orge of their opponents. London Thames. In the semi-finals, London Thames had suffered from a couple of come back surges from Streatham's Joel Collyer to run out a 45-39 win. In the other semi-final, Redhill & Reigate triumphed over Guildford.

The women's sabre event was dominated by Emma Hynes of London Thames who defeated Claire Monger (Kingston) 15-11 in the final – the other semi-finalists being Teresa Miarka (Wimbledon) and Fredericka Greatorex (London Thames).

The men's sabre saw a repeat of recent match-ups between Steve Pope and Chris Schofield of Guildford - this time the honours went to Steve Pope. Clive Galliano and Dan Kerr (both of Kingston) shared third place. However, in the team event, Kingston had their revenge, defeating Guildford 45-31 in the final
